Some will view this as a techie product. It integrates with a music library on your computer or other streaming device, requires Squeezebox server to be running on that computer or device, and expects a network (wired or wireless) so it can communicate with the server. But all of that sounds a whole lot more complicated than it is. The setup of the software and the device is straightforward, much easier than earlier incarnations (I also have the original Slimp3 player hardware which is ancient by today’s standards). In the end, there are several reason why I love this device and the approach taken by Slim Devices (now owned by Logitech).
First, it’s easy to search music and control the player. You can use the touch screen on the device, but I rarely do that other than possibly to Pause or Play the music. You can use any Web browser on a computer that is connected to your home network. And now you can use your iPhone as well with the iPeng app. The open approach means that there will be more and more ideas of how to interact with your music library – it’s an ecosystem that has grown and will continue to grow.
Logitech seems to have taken the best of what Slim Devices developed and matured it into a product that really fits the need, at least for me. It has both analog and digital interfaces, so you can choose how to connect it to your music system. It’s fully network aware, so it knows how to get updates and talk to other music services like music radio directly over the Internet. It appears to be well made, and it’s certainly polished and attractive as you would expect it to be. Through the Squeezebox Server software, it can play music in almost any non-DRM protected format. I have ripped my own music collection from the over 1,000 music CDs that I own, using high quality MP3 encoding, and am completely happy with the quality of the audio I get playing my tunes through the Squeezebox player.
If you have more than one Squeezebox Server compatible device, you can synchronize the playback of music if that’s what you want with a couple of clicks, and it works great. I use it that way all the time, playing on both the Squeezebox Touch an on a software app on my computer called SqueezePlay.
I could write a book about using this device, but in the end, the fact that I can control the playback of my music through any Web browser and my iPhone make this product for me.
Here is another Squeezebox Touch Review by Hsin Pai (Phoenix, AZ USA)
I own three of these units and am very impressed with the sound quality. I ended up buying the Squeezebox Touch controller that has the small color screen incorporated into the remote so I could see and select what was playing easier. Logitech really provides an exceptionally good value in streaming music throughout the house. The units were simple to set up and Logitech makes updating the units painless since you only need to touch the screen when a new update shows in the window. The units are small and not intrusive. They have been very reliable and almost never lose a signal from the computer. If you are looking to tap into your digital music files on your computer and wirelessly transmit them throughout your house, this unit is reasonbly inexpensive and works well. In addition, you can stream a number of high quality internet radio stations that are programmed into the Touch. You won’t be disappointed. Highly recommended.
